Welcome in Vlissingen, city by the sea.
Perhaps the statue of Michiel de Ruyter on the boulevard indicates best the connection of Vlissingen to the sea. The Netherlands' best-known naval hero in history and born Vlissinger gains fame as the savior of the Fatherland by preventing an end to the “Merchant Republic”. Fort Rammekens was built close to Vlissingen, among others, to guard the shipping connection to Middelburg, at the time one of the most important trading cities of the Northern Netherlands.
The strategic location at the mouth of the Westerschelde made Vlissingen one of the most bombed cities in the Netherlands in World War II . The end of the war on Walcheren is formed by the “Battle of the Schelde”, the largest military operation on Dutch territory and of great influence on the continuation of the war. In 2019, the battle was made into a film to celebrate 75 years of liberation.
The maritime past can also be seen in the shipyards which have been located in Vlissingen since the 16th century. The restoration of the “Dokje van Perry”, dating from 1704, the second oldest dry dock in Europe, was started in 2010. Old factory buildings of shipyard De Schelde, such as the carpentry factory and the welding shed are revived and at the same site a new city district arises.
